Real Talk | When Friends Get Involved

The process of preparing for your wedding could be so much more fun when you have a gang of enthusiastic friends by your side who are eager to lend their services. It definitely helps to have readily available hands to fold those myriads of invitations or pull off all those detail-oriented, time consuming DIY projects. But brides, be careful not to take advantage of your friends’ generosity too much. You’d be surprised how many times I’ve seen friendships take a strain during these times because the brides were getting too carried away and taking their families and close friends’ efforts for granted. Here are some tips you can consider in asking your friends for help in your wedding preparations.

So . . . IF you decide to get your friends involved

Make sure . . .

1) the person you want to ask for help is someone that you had kept in touch with within the past two years. If you know that you’re probably not going to contact them much after the wedding, then it’s also probably best not to call them just to ask for a favor, even if that person’s talents/services could save you a lot of money.

2) you ask for their help plenty of time in advance. This shows that you have thought this out carefully and consider them best for the job. I would say one month prior to the wedding is the absolute latest you should ask.

3) you are communicating the job descriptions clearly. Please don’t just say “I need your help” without supplying specific guidelines and expect your friends to know what you want. The more you communicate, the more it will also help them acquire a sense of ownership to their responsibilities and produce better outcome.

4) you do have plans to show appreciations for their help. Thank you cards, gifts, or thank you get together after the wedding… You can discuss this with your fiancé for ideas and include this to your budget.

Your friends are a major factor in your support network as leading up to your wedding. And just like on facebook, we’d like to be your friend. Whether you know exactly what you want, but don’t have the resources to get it, or aren’t sure where to begin at all, it’s alright! Together we can hand select your team of wedding professionals are there to take care of every little detail so you and your friends can enjoy the day together. You want your friends to enjoy the champagne breakfast with you as you are getting ready on your wedding morning, don’t you? We want to your friend (I’ve even hear best friend), your guide, your mentor, and often shoulder to cry on, and we’ll take over the hard work!

Just a few thoughts . . . what’s your experience having friends assist you on your wedding day. Good or Bad?

Major News Monday – Tabletop WOW!

One of my favorite parts of wedding designing is taking ideas from the couple and realizing them, especially the most abstract! I love the challenge of taking elements that seemingly have no through line and create a cohesive masterpiece—thanks to my professors at Kalamazoo College! My design style relies heavily on theatrical aspects, as my training begins with set design and construction. Understanding the minute elements of design and the nuances of a play/idea allow me to develop a plan to visualize the final outcome and design accordingly.

So . . . when I received an invitation to be a part of the upcoming NACE Tabletop Wow event hosted by the Detroit chapter of NACE, I was extremely excited to get involved! What’s even better, is this year’s theme is a tribute to the Movies!!!!!! Since I refuse to settle for anything less that exceptional to deliver to you my dear bride, I am constantly seeking ways to strengthen my skills of design and implementation. Here is another fantastic opportunity.

Here is the overview. After selecting the theme of my table (Harry Potter, Avatar, Caddy Shack, Action Films, Romantic Comedies, Musicals, Classics), I can collaborate with numerous vendors both in and out of NACE to design a table that will be displayed and judged at the April 21st monthly meeting at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township. The tables are required to be functional, in other words, people have to be able to eat and sit at the table (no Naked Sushi Models), and extra points will be awarded to tables producing the WOW factor for under $500 (and we are required to provide a handout of the cost for the table).

Here’s a quick blurb on last year’s Tabletop WOW event at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. I was told there was not theme last year, but as the second annual event, they’ve thrown out a new challenge – BRING IT!

Well . . . what do you think? I’m super excited, but there are so many options out there. Any suggestions? I would love to get your feedback on table themes you would like to have at your event! And if you are a vendor and would like to be a part of the design team, contact me!! By the way, it doesn’t have to be for just a wedding – Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Graduation, Retirement, Anniversary—Post your comments!

Brides to Be Shows – Part II

As promised, here is part two of the Brides to Be experience for Pam and I at Full Circle Eventi!  We had a lot of fun adding little touches to the booth to step up the details to another level.  We added the beautiful 4′ vases on the side to add some height.  But let’s stop talking and check out the photos!

Get Married! Ad due tomorrow – Ugh!

I’ve had a month to get everything ready for the deadline tomorrow. While I’ve gotten the print portion done with ease, the image has been killing me. I’m having the toughest time selecting an image to put in the magazine. I’d love to have a custom logo done, and actually I’ve designed one I really like, but I can’t translate it onto the computer. Since I’m not a graphic artist, I can’t just whip up my own image that is unique to me, so that leaves me with internet images.

So I am looking for something that is unique and doesn’t make the same statement everyone else out there is accustomed. Normally you see flowers, candles, wedding cakes, invitations, brides, grooms, rings and stuff of that sort. We are all aware that this is part of a wedding. But that does not make me unique. It doesn’t make my ad stand out and cry for attention. That is the key to advertising (and my philosophy for a lot of things, including weddings!)

Since ethnic weddings are my focal point, including Chaldean, Indian, Greek, Italian and Jewish weddings, I want a image that reflects my cultural influence in the Wedding Community. I also am looking for something that crosses multiple cultures. While I have found some items that could, the perfect image does not exists that will address all the cultures at one. So here are the images from which I’m selecting.

There are reasons I like each of the images. The first two and the last two are definitely much more Indian in nature, while the last one, while being an Arabic henna design, is an item embraced by the Indian and Arabic culture. The first two and the last one play on the “newest jewel in the Michigan wedding and event landscape” that is in the post, which is the reason why I really like those images. Personally I am drawn to the first image, but the second is softer and could be used by non-Indian brides. And of course I love henna! I think it is a beautiful art form and wish I was gifted with the talent myself!

I still haven’t made a decisive choice, and hope to ask around a bit today before I make the decision. Either way, I will be submitting it tonight by 7pm! YIKES!

By the way, you’ll have to check out the Get Married! January edition to find out exactly which one I picked!
