Wedding Couture | Indian Wedding Games

The very thought of weddings can bring to mind various fears, doubts, qualms for any bride. But for South Asian brides of the past, arranged marriages elevated fear of not knowing your husband-to-be, elevated trepidation. The beginning of new life with new people, the adjustments and understanding of new responsibilities could send any bride running. In India, as the bride and groom were not permitted to meet before their marriage, Indian wedding games evolved to make the perfect starter for the newlyweds and their families to get to know each other.. The tradition of many of these games has survived even in today’s modern marriages in which the couple knows each other well before the ceremony.

These traditional wedding games not only break the ice between the couples, but also between their family members. It also makes it easier to get settled down in the family and surroundings. Here are some usual games still in practice:

Types of wedding games:

  1. Hide wedding shoes: In every Hindu wedding, the groom is directed to remove his shoes prior to entering the mandap, where holy rituals are performed. The bride’s sister or the maids accompanying her, on finding suitable moment, grab the groom’s shoes and hide them. After the marriage ceremony, groom’s sister-in-law or maids demand a ransom amount from the groom to return the shoes. In this sweet prank, bargaining and negotiations happen between them and the deal is finalized at a handsome amount.

  2. Fish the ring: In this, the couple is made to sit facing each other and with a bowl of milk in front of them. A ring is dropped in the bowl and the newlyweds are asked to find the ring. Whoever gets the ring first is declared as the winner. As per the beliefs, the winner of the game rules the roost for the entire life.
  3. Pillow game: It’s a fun game for the couple but enjoyed to the brim by the audience. Here the couple is made to sit with their backs to each other and a pillow held between their shoulders. They are later asked question from the relatives, which is answered only by nodding their heads in yes or no direction. Since they cannot see each other they do not know how the other is responding. The questions are lighthearted like, “Will you rule over him/her?” or “Will you pamper like a child if your partner gets angry?” or ” will you kiss your partner now?” or question on their likes and dislikes. According to their score they are also given rankings. The negative scorers are are titled as “I want to know you better-couple” and the high scorers are titled as “Two hearts yet one soul-couple”.
  4. Unknot Knotted String: This game had been practiced to forecast the future relationship of the couple. Knotted string is a kind of bracelet tied on the hands of, both the bride and the groom. In this too, fun and frolic becomes part of the sight. The couple tries to unknot the complex knots of the string by using one hand.
  5. Search name: The grooms name is hennaed on the bride hand in tiny letter amidst the crisscrossed mehndi. The groom is asked to find his name on the brides hand and give her a gift. This game gives a simple reason for the groom to hold his brides hand and allows the shy bride to feel the warmth of love without any embarrassment.

Bridal Couture |Dress Shopping Tips

Hi Ladies,

I apologize for my absence over the past week. It’s been very busy preparing for this season. But no worries, we are alive and kicking – as we will be until the end of time, always bringing you the best of the best!!! Thought we would start this week off with a little bang in preparation for the big bang and fourth of July weekend approaching shortly. We definitely have some great sparks to share with you next week!

Since I’ve had the pleasure of working as a bridal consultant for a boutique and in the fashion industry, I thought it might be time to touch on one of the most important tasks you as a bride face when planning your wedding—THE DRESS. If you’re like me, you get glued to the television every time Say Yes to the Dress Marathon weekend pops up. If you’re as obsessed with Kleinfeld’s, St. Pucchi, Pnina Tornai
as I am, keep reading to get the best tips get the best fit for your designer gown!

Ladies I know that as a bride to be, you not only want to make yourself beautiful and stunning, during your ceremony, but also keep your budget balanced, and struggle to actual make that happen. So here are a few tips to balance you desire to look stunning without breaking the bank,

1. When to start your wedding dress purchasing?
Giving yourself plenty of time to choose your dream & affordable wedding dress is very important. Rushing into a local wedding dress store several days before your big day is not a good idea. Rushing equals A LOT of extra money to shell out! Start shopping for your wedding address at least 8 months before your wedding ceremony and place your order at least 4 month before that day. Make sure you let you’re consultant know ahead of time if you are running close to the wedding to find out what the “lead” time is for the designer. Each designer has a different time frame they request for an order, and depending on their side, this time frame fluctuates, sometimes addition months of additional time to your order to receive the gown. Additionally, you need to allow for at least 3 weeks for alterations that will need to be done to ensure the couture and custom fit gown for your dramatic walk down the aisle.

2. Save your money on wedding dress
Falling in love with your dress is one thing, but affording it is another. Keep in mind, the most expensive one is not always the best one. Many brides find wedding dresses in places other than your standard wedding boutique. There are thousands of shops online offering discounts on designer gowns; sample sales, TheThriftShopper, and Ebay can also be great resources. It’s not uncommon to find one with different prices on those sites. So make sure you’ve shopped around before placing your order.

3. Make a Blueprint under Professional Suggestions.
To find the wedding dress that suits you best, take both your figure and your personality into consideration. “Am I tall or medium-height? Am I full-figured or delicate-shaped? Am I introverted or open-minded?” You should get clear answers to those questions in your mind and then turn to experienced wedding consultants for help. They will tell you what kinds of dresses will make you feel confident and beautiful. With the help of their professional suggestions, you can make a brief blueprint, which will prevent you from getting dazed when facing thousands of wedding dresses on the market.

4. Physical comfort comes first.
On your big day, I know you want to catch everyone’s eyes but that shouldn’t subject you to your physical discomfort! If you’re tugging your dress up or have boning jutting into your ribs, it will be unable to dance and laugh, not to mention posing for photos. To avoid such embarrassment, keep in mind a style that will suit your day – for example, a shorter tea-length or cocktail length dress is best for a beach wedding. If you like to dance and anticipate doing the limbo, perhaps a strapless dress will say “goodbye” to you.

5. Don’t forget to wash before wear.

Last but not least, keep in mind that your wedding dress is made in workshop, not in bacteria-free operation room. It goes though long journey before you getting it. For the sake of safety, consider having the dress professionally cleaned before you wear it!
